Many critics see 1973 as the beginning of the New Venezuelan Cinema for it was the year “Cuando quiero llorar no lloro”, the film that set the trend appeared. It was directed by Mauricio Walerstein, born in Mexico but best known for his work in Venezuela. Based on a novel by Miguel Otero Silva, it follows the story of three young men from different social classes, all named Victorino, who are born on the same day and die on the same day. It criticizes Venezuelan society through contrasts drawn between their experiences of both life and death. The film’s combination of social analysis with a high degree of technical quality attracted large audiences.
